The body lift, also known as belt lipectomy or circumferential torsoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to remove significant excess skin as well as fat from the torso. This procedure can improve loose, sagging skin and uneven contours of the abdomen, buttocks, waist, hips and thighs.
The body lift is generally sought by individuals who are either unable to lose a significant amount of weight or who are left with lose, inelastic skin on much of the body due to childbirth, age or massive weight loss as with bariatric surgery.
The body lift is an extensive procedure which essentially combines the techniques of abdominoplasty, liposuction, the thigh lift and the buttock lift. Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr. Donald Roland performs body lift surgery at one of the desirable hospitals or surgicenters in the New York City area using general anesthesia. Surgical times may take anywhere from three to seven hours. In many cases, the procedure is performed as two separate surgeries approximately four months apart, with the first operation addressing removal of the frontal tissue and the second operation targeting the back after the patient has healed.
The recovery after the body lift lasts approximately four to six week. Surgical drains are often inserted at the incision sites and these may remain in place for several days to weeks. Compression garments must be worn for several weeks. The results of the body lift are immediately visible.
Body lifts can remove loose and sagging skin and excess fat from much of the torso. Specifically, the surgery addresses the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks and thighs. The procedure may also be referred to as belt lipectomy or circumferential torsoplasty.
The best candidates for the body lift are in good physical condition with significant loose, inelastic skin on much of the body. The body lift is often sought by individuals following childbirth or massive weight loss, such as with bariatric surgery.
In essence, the body lift combines the techniques of abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), liposuction, the thigh lift and the buttock lift. It may be performed as two separate procedures several months apart. In total, surgical times may take three to seven hours under general anesthesia. During surgery, excess skin may be removed from the abdomen, buttocks and thighs, and excess fat may be removed with liposuction techniques.
After your surgery, surgical drains may be inserted at the incision sites to collect excess fluid. Dr. Roland will remove these within several days to several weeks. You will need to wear special compression garments for several weeks to help the body adjust to the new, slimmer contours. Though swelling and bruising will likely result, results can be seen immediately after your surgery.
Dr. Roland will advise you on when you can resume activities after your body lift as he monitors your recovery during your visits in his Manhattan office. However, the recovery after a body lift can be somewhat extensive, lasting approximately four to six week.
Patients may have somewhat extensive scarring after the body lift. Every effort is made to place the incisions and resultant scars as inconspicuously as possible.
With proper diet and exercise, the results of the body lift can be long lasting.
Post-operative complications from body lifting surgery are possible and may include bleeding, infection, seromas, and poor healing. Dr. Roland will review all of your options as well as the potential risks during your consultation in his Manhattan office.
