Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure in which a synthetic implant is inserted into the chin area. Chin augmentation can increase the size and prominence of the chin, making it an ideal solution for individuals with a weak or undersized chin. The procedure can also help to balance out the facial features for greater facial harmony. In fact, it is commonly performed along with rhinoplasty to improve the aesthetic balance of the face.
Dr. Roland will evaluate your chin and face during your consultation in our Manhattan office in order to determine the best approach to meet your desired results. The chin augmentation procedure may be performed in Dr. Roland's New York City office or at one of Manhattan's desirable hospitals or surgicenters. Either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia may be used and the surgery usually lasts thirty minutes to one hour. The incision for chin augmentation may be made just under the chin or inside of the lower lip. Dr. Roland will select an implant of the proper size and shape and then insert it into a pocket over the jawbone before closing the incision.
Some discomfort can be expected after the chin augmentation procedure and this can be lessened with medication. Swelling and bruising may also result, and patients may find it difficult to smile, talk or make other facial movements for a brief period of time. If incisions are made on the inside of the mouth, dietary restrictions may be necessary. Surface stitches are removed within five to seven days and patients are often able to return to work after one week.
Chin augmentation is able to improve a weak or undersized chin with the use of a synthetic implant. This will add prominence to the chin while also improving facial harmony. Chin augmentation can be combined with rhinoplasty to help balance out or offset the nose and improve the aesthetic balance of the face.
The best candidates for chin augmentation are in good general health and have realistic expectations that they have discussed with their plastic surgeon. Chin augmentation is generally sought by individuals who are looking to improve a weak or undersized chin.
Chin augmentation is performed at one of the New York City area's hospitals or surgicenters under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. This is a short procedure that takes just thirty minutes to an hour to complete. A small incision is made under the chin or on the inside of the lower lip, and an implant is then inserted through this incision and placed over the jawbone.
During your recovery from chin augmentation, you may experience some discomfort, swelling and bruising. Facial movements like talking and smiling may initially be difficult, and dietary restriction may be needed if the incisions are located on the inside of the mouth.
Dr. Roland will advise you when you can resume activities after your chin augmentation, however work can typically be resumed after one week.
The scar from chin augmentation is small and well concealed. The incision and resultant scar may be made just under the chin or on the inside of the mouth.
Although rare, post-operative complications from chin augmentation are possible. These may include infection, reactions to anesthesia, implant shifting, capsular contracture, unnatural shape and poor healing. Dr. Roland will review your options and explain all risks associated with chin augmentation during your consultation in his Manhattan office.
