New York City Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia is a medical condition characterized by an enlarged male breast. Though not often discussed, this is a common condition and many men suffering from gynecomastia are very self conscious of their appearance. There is often no known cause for gynecomastia though it has been associated with some medical conditions and the use of certain drugs.

Male breast reduction is a surgical procedure which can help to contour the male chest for a flatter, firmer appearance by removing excess fat, tissue and sometimes excess skin from the chest. The surgery may be performed on one or both breasts depending on the individual patient's condition. During consultation at his Manhattan office, Dr. Roland will be happy to discuss the options available to you and how male breast reduction can help you to meet your desired goals.

Dr. Roland may perform male breast reduction in one of the desirable hospitals or outpatient facilities in the New York City area. General anesthesia is commonly used and surgical times average two or more hours. Excess fatty tissue may be removed with liposuction techniques, whereas excess glandular tissue and skin will require excision.

Some swelling, bruising and discomfort can be expected following male breast reduction surgery. You may take medication to alleviate the discomfort. You will need to wear a special support garment for several weeks to help support the new contours of the chest and to minimize swelling. If drainage tubes are inserted at the incision sites, they are often removed within a day or two. Many patients find that they can return to work within one week or less. While the results of male breast reduction are considered permanent, excess weight gain or the use of certain medication like steroids may cause a recurrence of the condition.

Commonly Asked Questions Concerning Male Breast Reduction

What can male breast reduction do for me?

Male breast reduction improves an enlarged male chest by removing excess fatty tissue, glandular tissue and skin. Enlargement of the male chest is a fairly common condition known as gynecomastia, and while most causes go unknown the condition has been associated with certain drugs and medical conditions. The condition may occur in one or both breasts.

Male breast reduction is a surgical procedure which improves the contour of the chest to create a firmer, flatter appearance. For many men, this improves their self confidence and self esteem as well.

Am I a good candidate for male breast reduction?

The best candidates for male reduction include men who are looking to improve enlarged breasts, are in good physical health, and have realistic expectations that they have discussed with their surgeon. If a cause for the gynecomastia can be determined, it should be sufficiently treated before undergoing male breast reduction surgery.

Who should not consider male breast reduction?

While male breast reduction can dramatically improve the appearance of an enlarged breast in men, gynecomastia may reoccur due to excess weight gain or the use of certain medications like steroids.

How is male breast reduction performed?

Male breast reduction may be performed in a hospital or outpatient facility in the New York City area. The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia and lasts two or more hours. One or both breasts may be treated as needed.

If the enlargement is primarily caused by excess fatty tissue, this can be removed with liposuction alone. If excess glandular tissue and skin are involved, this will require excision. Often a combination of the two techniques is needed.

What is the recovery from male breast reduction like?

After surgery, drainage tube may be applied to the treatment area. These are usually removed within a day or two. You will wear a compression garment for several weeks to help the skin adjust to the new contours of the chest.

The chest may be swollen, bruised and uncomfortable after surgery. Medication can help to ease discomfort. Many patients return to work within one week or less post operatively.

What are the risks of male breast reduction?

Possible complications of male breast reduction include:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Anesthesia reaction
  • Fluid loss or accumulation
  • Improper healing
  • Asymmetry
