New York Liposuction

One of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed today, liposuction is able to sculpt the body and improve the body shape by removing unwanted fat from specific areas. While many areas of the body can be treated with liposuction, some of the more commonly treated areas include the neck, breasts, back, upper arms, waist, hips, abdomen, buttocks, thighs and knees. Manhattan Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. Donald Roland also incorporates the use of finer liposuction techniques in order to lipo-sculpt certain areas of the body, such as etching the divisions between the abdominal muscles in order to produce a “six-pack” appearance.

Liposuction is best used as a treatment for stubborn areas of body fat, such as the love handles or saddle bags, and is not intended as a substitute for proper diet and exercise. Dr. Roland may perform liposuction at his Manhattan office or at one of the desirable hospitals or surgicenters in the New York City area. Local anesthesia or general anesthesia may be used and the procedure may take one to two hours to complete depending on the treatment area. To begin the procedure, a fluid is first injected into the fatty tissues in order to ease the removal of fat and minimize pain. The fat is then removed with suction.

Some swelling, bruising and discomfort may result following your liposuction procedure. Pain medication can be taken to ease discomfort. If drainage tubes are inserted at the incisions sites they are usually removed within a few days. A compression garment will need to be worn for four to six weeks to help the skin contract to the new, leaner size. Most patients find that they can return to work after one to two weeks.

Commonly Asked Questions Concerning Your Liposuction

What can liposuction do for me?

Liposuction sculpts the body by removing excess fat. This improves the overall body shape and proportion. Liposuction is a good treatment for stubborn areas of excess fat and is often used on the following areas:

  • Neck
  • Breasts
  • Back
  • Upper Arms
  • Waist
  • Hips
  • Abdomen
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Knees

Dr. Roland also performs liposculpture in which finer liposuction techniques are used on certain areas of the body, such as creating a “six-pack” appearance by etching the divisions between the abdominal muscles.

What won't liposuction correct?

Though liposuction can dramatically improve the body shape, it is not intended as a substitute for proper diet and exercise.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

The best candidates for liposuction are of normal or near normal body weight but are bothered by areas of stubborn fat. Commonly requested areas for treatment include the abdomen, back, breasts, buttocks, hips, knees, neck, thighs, upper arms, and waist.

Candidates for liposuction should also be in generally good health and have realistic expectations that they have discussed with their plastic surgeon.

How is liposuction performed?

Liposuction is performed in an office-based facility or one of the New York City area’s hospitals or surgicenters. The procedure takes one to two hours to complete under general or local anesthesia. Dr. Roland will first inject a special fluid into the fatty tissue. This facilitates its removal while also minimizing pain. Suction is then used to remove the fat.

What is the recovery from liposuction like?

After your liposuction, Dr. Roland may place drainage tubes in the treatment area. These are removed within a few days. You may experience swelling, bruising and discomfort. Discomfort can be eased with medication. Many patients return to work after one or two weeks postoperatively. A compression garment must be worn for four to six weeks to help the skin adjust to the new contours of the body.

How long do the effects of liposuction last?

The effects of liposuction are long lasting with proper diet and exercise.

What are the risks of liposuction?

Possible complications of liposuction include: infection, improper healing, anesthesia reaction, and bleeding. Dr. Roland will discuss the risks and benefits of liposuction with you before your surgery.
