Of the facial features, the nose is the most prominent. It is for this reason that a large, poorly shaped or otherwise unattractive nose can be a source of anxiety for many. Rhinoplasty, also referred to as nose surgery or a nose job, is a plastic surgery procedure which can improve the appearance and even the function of the nose.
There are several changes which can be made to the nose with rhinoplasty, including the following:
Rhinoplasty is an individualized procedure and, as such, the surgery must be tailored to the specific needs and expectations of the patient. Dr. Roland will evaluate your nose and facial appearance during your consultation in our Manhattan office in order to determine the best approach to meet your individual needs. In general, candidates for rhinoplasty are in good physical health, have realistic expectations for improvement, and have completed their nasal growth (typically around age 14 or later).
The rhinoplasty surgery may be performed in Dr. Roland's New York City office or at one of Manhattan's desirable hospitals or surgicenters. Surgical times average one to two hours and either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation may be used.
Dr. Roland performs all rhinoplasties through predominantly internal incisions. Working through the incisions, the bone and cartilage of the nose are sculpted to the desired shape.
Some swelling, bruising and discomfort can be expected after rhinoplasty. Discomfort can be limited with medications and most noticeable swelling will fade within two weeks or so. A splint and dressings are usually applied after surgery and these will be removed within one to two weeks. If nasal packing is required, it is removed within a day or two. Stitches are removed after one to two weeks, and patients can return to work within the same time period.
Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, can improve the appearance and often the function of the nose. As the most prominent facial feature, aesthetic changes to the nose can dramatically improve facial balance and the overall facial appearance. Rhinoplasties are most effective for patients who want to improve:
The best candidates for a rhinoplasty procedure:
Dr. Roland will address each of these factors during your consultation in order to evaluate your eligibility for this procedure. He will also conduct a thorough examination of your nose and facial appearance. Rhinoplasty is a very individualized procedure and must be tailored to each patient.
Rhinoplasty may be performed in one of the New York City area's hospitals or surgicenters. The rhinoplasty may be performed as either an open or closed procedure. Dr. Roland performs his rhinoplasties through predominantly internal (closed) incisions, keeping all incisions confined to the inside of the nose so that there is no visible scarring. In rare instances, a small incision may need to be made on the underside of the nose between the nostrils, which is known as an open procedure.
Once the incision is made, Dr. Roland will sculpt the bone and cartilage of the nose to achieve the new shape.
After your rhinoplasty, Dr. Roland will apply dressings and a splint to the nose. These will be removed within one to two weeks post operatively. Nasal packing is sometimes used and is removed within a day or two. You may experience swelling, bruising and discomfort. Most noticeable swelling will subside within two weeks or so, however the final results of rhinoplasty may not be achieved for as long as one year as some minor, unnoticeable swelling may remain for that time. Sutures are removed after one to two weeks. Many patients return to work after the first or second week post operatively.
If your rhinoplasty is performed as a closed procedure, all incisions are made on the inside of the nose and result in no visible scarring. If your rhinoplasty is performed as an open procedure, a small incision is made on the column of skin separating the nostrils on the underside of the nose. This results in a very well concealed, small scar.
Possible complications of rhinoplasty include: bleeding, infection, allergic reaction to the anesthesia, poor healing, and the need for revision. Dr. Roland will discuss the risks and benefits of rhinoplasty with you before your surgery.
